High Definition (2026)

High Definition investigates the material conditions of postindustrial life through a lens of Hosso Buddhist phenomenology. Contrasting from Western phenomenology, or the study of the consciousness, Hosso Buddhism views consciousness as a sixth component in our collection of senses, and contemplates consciousness as a matter of perception. Incorporating a visual language of materials like composite wood and LEDs, High Definition draws parallels between contemporary manufacturing processes and Buddhist notions of the self, critiquing the invisibility of ubiquity and our relationships with our built environments. Through improvisational prompts and butoh, dancers inhabit an unsocialized body where movement becomes untethered from conditioned patterns of behavior, dissolving the illusion of a stable self and opening space for alternative modes of perception.
